What You Should Know About Motor Vehicle Insurance
The two main types of motor car insurance covers that you can purchase using the Divani Featured Terms are:
- Comprehensive insurance cover
- Third Party Only insurance cover
What are the scopes of cover for each? We discuss below.
Third-Party Only (TPO) Motor Vehicle Insurance Cover
TPO motor insurance covers you against legal liabilities they may have towards third parties who sustain bodily injury including death, and property damage arising out of the use of the insured vehicle.
A third party is defined as any person other than you or the insurer.
Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance Cover
Comprehensive motor car insurance offers more cover than the TPO cover. Besides protecting you against third party liabilities, a comprehensive motor policy also covers you against loss or damage to the vehicle as a result of fire or theft, accidental damage to the vehicle as well as any malicious damage to your vehicle.
It is important to note that this policy does not cover you, the insured, in case of an injury sustained in an accident. This is a common exclusion from the policy. As such, we advise you take out a Personal Accident insurance as an extension to your comprehensive motor vehicle insurance.
Types of Motor Vehicle Insurance Policies
Motor Private – you can purchase a motor private insurance policy for vehicles used for social, domestic or pleasure purposes; whether driven by you or by an authorized person(s). This policy is also ideal for you if you use your vehicle in connection with your business or that of your employer.
Motor Commercial Own Goods – get this motor insurance if you use your vehicle to carry your own goods.
Motor Commercial General Cartage – this insurance will be ideal if you hire out your vehicle to carry goods.
Motor Vehicle Policy Extensions
At an additional premium, you can extend your motor vehicle insurance policy to include other benefits such as those described below. The extent of the extension will vary from one insurance company to the other.
Windscreen Cover
The amount defined as the limit of cover in the motor insurance policy can be increased at an additional premium.
Radio Cassettes & Personal Effects
Damage to or loss of radio cassettes and personal effects in the insured vehicle can be covered at an additional premium.
Loss of Use (Private use only)
An additional premium paid to include loss of use benefit, also known as a courtesy car, will be used to hire a car for you while the insured vehicle is in a garage for repairs.
Excess Protector
In case of an insurable loss, a traditional motor insurance policy will require you to cater for a portion of the claim. This portion is usually defined in the policy and expressed as a value or percentage of the claim.
Excesses are used by insurance companies to prevent policyholders from reporting and claiming small losses and to manage claim frauds. With excess protector for your motor vehicle insurance, you will be exempted from paying this portion of the claim and the insurer will cater for the full amount.
Roadside Rescue (Private use only)
You can pay an additional premium to have roadside rescue benefits included in your motor insurance policy. These come in handy in such cases as mechanical damages to the vehicle.
Exclusions under TPO Motor Vehicle Insurance Cover
The TPO motor insurance cover does not cover the following losses:
- Death or bodily injury to person(s) related to or employed by the insured or person(s) transported in the insured vehicle.
- Damage to property inside the insured vehicle or in care, control or custody of the insured, the insured’s household or their employees.
General Exclusions Under the Comprehensive Motor Cover
The comprehensive motor insurance cover does not cover the following losses:
- Death or bodily injury to person(s) related to or employed by the insured or person(s) transported in the insured vehicle.
- Damage to property inside the insured vehicle or in care, control or custody of the insured, the insured’s household or their employees.
- Consequential loss, depreciation, wear or tear and repairs caused by mechanical or electrical breakdown.
- Damage arising from loading or unloading the vehicle, and any third party claims that may arise during the process.
- Damage to the tires unless the vehicle is damaged at the same time.
- Loss or damage due to or arising out of earthquakes and flood
- Loss or damage due to or arising from war or warlike activities
